  • South Lake Tahoe resident selected for Peace Corps service in Jamaica

    Megan Hicks of South Lake Tahoe has been accepted into the Peace Corps.Hicks, 28, will be departing for Jamaica on March 17 to begin pre-service training as a youth development volunteer for the Peace Corps. Upon graduation from volunteer training in June, Hicks will be work Jamaican youth to make healthy choices about their lives.Hicks is the daughter of John Christian and Kathleen Hicks and a graduate of South Tahoe High School. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, where she earned a degree in American Studies in 2004. Hicks has previously worked as an American Sign Language interpreter in the Bay Area.As motivation for becoming a Peace Corps volunteer, Hicks quoted Eleanor Roosevelt: "You must do the things you think you cannot do."During the first three months of her service, Hicks will live with a host family in Jamaica to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture.
